Republican critics are becoming increasingly fed up with House Speaker Mike Johnson. They have claimed he is “worse” than former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Some have taken special offense at his promise to secure the border but have failed to advance a bill.
One particular Republican, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, to the surprising step to vote for Johnson to be removed.
It is unclear if anyone else will join her to vote against the Speaker. Now, Donald Trump is commenting on the drama. He is calling on House Republicans to respond to the controversy with this advice.
From Fox News:
Former President Donald Trump has come to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s defense, as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., pushes for the Louisiana Republican’s ouster from the leadership position.“Well, look, we have a majority of one, OK?” Trump told radio host John Fredericks on Monday. “It’s not like he can go and do whatever he wants to do. I think he’s a very good person. You know, he stood very strongly with me on NATO when I said NATO has to pay up …It’s a tough situation when you have. I think he’s a very good man. I think he’s trying very hard. And again, we’ve got to have a big election.”
Donald Trump defended Speaker Johnson against calls to remove him from his post. He explained that, with his small House majority, Johnson does not have the power to “do whatever he wants.” Johnson needs the cooperation of Democrats if he wants anything passed.
Trump called Speaker Johnson a “very good person.” He said the lawmaker stood “very strong” with Trump on NATO. Trump ended by saying Republicans need to have “a big election.”
Republicans will have to expand their majority in the House by a large margin if they want to get much done in the next Congress. They will also have to win back many seats in the Senate, so they can pass meaningful legislation from both chambers.
That, and they have to win back the White House, to end Joe Biden’s progressive agenda. That is a very big election that Trump will need, to accomplish his agenda.
The ongoing conflict between House Republicans, however, will not help. When voters see Republicans constantly fighting, instead of uniting to push back on Biden’s agenda, they might be less likely to vote for the party.
