On the campaign trail, both presidential candidates will need all the support they can get. This certainly includes major labor groups and other economic-related organizations.
Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who has often referred to himself as the “everyday Joe” and an advocate for the working man, hopes to secure many such voters.
But apparently, he doesn’t have the support he claims he does.
During the ABC News town hall on Thursday night, Biden first denied that he intended to ban fracking. Then he made a fairly definitive statement:
“Boilermakers overwhelmingly endorse me,” he said.
The problem is, either Biden was referring to another labor group and he made a mistake, or he was fed the wrong information.
This according to Boilermakers Union Local 154 leader John Hughes, who quickly responded (via Breitbart):
The other day I’m watching the debate and I see Joe Biden tell everybody that the Boilermakers endorsed him and that is not true.
And I would like somebody to tell me who — he said he talked to somebody — I’d like to know who he talked to in the Boilermakers because anybody I talk to did not endorse him.
Hughes further added that the International Boilermakers website has not officially endorsed a candidate for the 2020 election, and they didn’t endorse a candidate in 2016, either.
He specifically said they didn’t support the Obama/Biden ticket “because of their energy issues.”
Furthermore, while the national Boilermakers group as a whole hasn’t endorsed a candidate, it seems the Local 154 has — and it’s President Donald Trump.
Former Pennsylvania Congressman Lou Barletta reacted as follows:
I couldn’t believe it when Joe Biden blatantly lied at a town hall right here in Pennsylvania and said he was overwhelmingly endorsed by the Boilermakers.
As a matter of fact, Boilermakers Local 154 endorsed President Donald Trump last month.
And I knew this first-hand because I worked with John Hughes, the business manager, and Local 154 on that endorsement.
There seems to be plenty of evidence to prove Biden’s statement false. Perhaps he thought some Boilermakers supported him, but to say they “overwhelmingly” backed him appears to be a clear fabrication.
Barletta isn’t off-base, either.
Last month, Hughes wrote to Trump (via The Village Reporter):
It is with great honor that I write this letter to endorse your campaign as you run for re-election of the President of the United States.
I am happy to support your administration as you have proven to be a true friend of the Boilermakers, and I wish you the best of luck in your campaign.
It’s possible that the Trump campaign will seize on this apparent misstep of Biden’s. If they do, don’t be surprised to hear the President talk about it in a future debate.
This is the sort of thing that could potentially haunt any candidate for election.
- During the ABC News town hall, presidential nominee Joe Biden said Boilermakers “overwhelmingly” support him.
- A local union leader quickly called out the statement, saying it was “not true.”
- In fact, that particular union just recently endorsed President Donald Trump for reelection.
