President Joe Biden has lost several key members of his administration over the years. And though it’s common for high-ranking officials to occasionally step down, the latest announcement is making waves.
That’s because this involves a particularly significant member of the White House, and a well-known name in Washington.
Biden’s domestic policy adviser, Susan Rice, is stepping down.
The White House confirmed the news later on Sunday, and it comes as a bit of a surprise. Rice was one of the more visible bosses in Washington, and had been part of the Obama administration as well.
After getting news of her departure, President Biden said that “no one is more capable, and more determined to get important things done for the American people than Susan Rice.”
Rice is the only person to serve as both National Security Adviser and Domestic Policy Adviser. Biden added:
But what sets her apart as a leader and colleague is the seriousness with which she takes her role and the urgency and tenacity she brings, her bias towards action and results, and the integrity, humility and humor with which she does this work. I thank Susan for her service, her counsel and her friendship. I will miss her.
Rice was instrumental in expanding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), though critics maintain that it’s a deeply flawed and even failed policy.
She was also an advocate for police reform and reducing gun violence, often calling for more firearm control. Of course, many saw this as simply more soft-on-crime rhetoric from another left-winger.
As for who’s going to replace Rice, rumors say that Biden’s staff secretary Neera Tanden might get the job.
It’s notable that Rice announces she’s quitting just before POTUS is expected to formally announce his re-election campaign for 2024. Many point toward polls that show the majority of voters don’t want him to run again.
Rice has a long history in D.C. dating back to 1993, when she began serving as Director for International Organizations and Peacekeeping at the National Security Council under Bill Clinton.
It’s a significant loss for the Biden administration, and one that may speak toward his inability to win another presidential election.
He’s watched several top officials disappear during his reign and even his own party may be leaning toward another candidate for 2024. Some surveys showed the majority of Democrat voters would prefer another option.
Either way, it looks like we’re in for a big-time shake-up next year.
