Black Voters Challenge Kamala Harris’s Record: Identity Politics Fall Short as Trump Gains Support

The media is pulling out all the stops to secure black voters for Kamala Harris in this election cycle. They seem to think that since Harris calls herself a “woman of color,” black Americans should automatically rally behind her, no questions asked.

But with a less-than-stellar performance as Biden’s VP and a history as California’s prosecutor where she put thousands of black men behind bars, many black voters are not convinced Harris is their candidate.

And now, this strategy seems to be backfiring. MSNBC recently aired a segment featuring black voters in Philadelphia, and the responses left anchor Alex Wagner visibly stunned.

Voters from a typically blue county in Pennsylvania openly shared why they were leaning toward Donald Trump over Kamala Harris — and their reasons have left Democrats scrambling for answers.

From Daily Wire:
MSNBC anchor Alex Wagner was clearly shocked by the brutal responses from black voters in Philadelphia when it came to why they were supporting former President Donald Trump instead of Vice President Kamala Harris…

“I’m not putting her down because she’s a woman … but at the end of the day, I don’t think that Kamala has the personality.”

Voters Aren’t Sold on Harris’s Experience

When asked why she wouldn’t support Harris, one woman was quick to clarify that her decision had nothing to do with Harris being a woman or a person of color.

“She’s a woman of color. I’m not putting her down because of that,” she said. But she went on to add that Harris lacks the “personality” to handle high-stakes foreign leaders like Putin.

Another woman echoed this sentiment, pointing out that it’s not Harris’s gender or race that’s the problem — it’s her qualifications. “She don’t have the qualification or the education to really run America,” she said.

For her, the idea of trusting Harris for another term is simply “crazy.” Many voters expressed doubt over Harris’s ability to connect with and represent them, especially given her limited experience at the national level.

Harris’s Past as a Prosecutor Haunts Her

Harris’s track record as a prosecutor has also become a sticking point. Several black voters mentioned her history of cracking down on truancy, where she went after parents — many of them black — for their children’s school attendance.

“The first time I heard the name Kamala Harris, it was in association to locking up parents for truancy,” one woman recalled. This tough-on-crime approach, often aimed at black communities, has left a sour taste for voters who feel Harris has not championed their struggles.

Adding fuel to the fire, some voters questioned Harris’s fluctuating identity claims. One interviewee pointed out that Harris initially highlighted her Indian heritage when she was first sworn into the Senate but only began emphasizing her “blackness” as her political ambitions grew.

“We all know that she’s not black, let’s understand that,” she said, adding that it feels disingenuous.

Trump Gains Support Among Disillusioned Voters

On the other hand, Trump is gaining surprising traction in these communities. A Guatemalan voter emphasized how immigration issues have played into his support for Trump, noting a spike in crime and tension around new immigrants.

“For me, it’s immigration,” he said. “Seeing the new immigrants come in, they’re more violent, it’s more chaos.” He shared how his family, who have been in America longer, feels misrepresented and increasingly unsafe due to recent immigration policies.

Another voter doubled down on their support for Trump, saying they were voting for him “unequivocally, period.” As Election Day approaches, he stated firmly that his mind is made up and nothing would change that.

These voters have rejected the media’s assumption that they’ll automatically back Harris just because of her background.

The Reality Check: Harris Isn’t Winning Hearts

For years, Democrats have counted on a loyal black voter base, but this election is proving that allegiance isn’t guaranteed.

Kamala Harris may tick the identity boxes, but for many black voters, her record doesn’t align with their interests. Instead, some are rallying behind Trump, drawn by his straightforward approach to issues like the economy, crime, and immigration.

In short, Democrats are beginning to realize that black voters won’t be swayed by labels alone.

Harris’s “woman of color” card isn’t enough to make up for what many see as a lack of experience, a troubling prosecutorial history, and policies that seem more show than substance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Harris’s label as a “woman of color” isn’t swaying black voters who want action, not identity politics.
  • Concerns over immigration and safety are pushing some black and immigrant voters toward Trump.
  • Voters expressed doubts about Harris’s ability to lead, questioning her experience and sincerity.
