A former New Jersey councilman has been accused of stealing money from a Democratic club. Previously, the Democratic politician was charged with selling cocaine and meth to an undercover cop.

On Thursday, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office said Malik D. Johnston – of Flemington, New Jersey – was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of theft by unlawful taking – a third-degree crime. He was initially charged with the crime in October. If convicted of the third-degree crime, Johnston faces up to five years in prison and a fine of as much as $15,000.

Johnston, 47, previously served as a member of the Flemington township council and as a former officer of the Flemington Democratic Club. Johnston is also known as Pippin J. Folk. He is accused of withdrawing $1,000 on June 2, 2023, from a Bridgewater bank from an account for the Flemington Democratic Club.

Prosecutors stated that at the time of the withdrawal Johnston was not a member of the club. The prosecutor’s statement did not show how he gained access to the account or how the money was spent.

Johnston ignored calls from the community for him to resign from his council position following his charges. He did not run for reelection in November. Johnston has a history of run-ins with the law.

The embattled Democrat was indicted in June 2023 by a Hunterdon County Grand Jury on eight drug charges. Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson stated that Johnston allegedly sold cocaine and methamphetamine to an undercover police officer in Raritan Township between December 2022 and February 2023.

A woman last year accused Johnston of offering drugs to her teenage daughter outside a retail store. The 18-year-old daughter told her mother that Johnston asked her if “she does crystal.” The mother understood this to be a slang term for drugs.

Another woman demanded at a council meeting that Johnston resign from his position. She told him, “Malik you need to step down now. This is not going away.”

A June 3 pretrial hearing on the drug charges is set for June 3.
