Emotions have been fiery ever since Hamas attacked Israeli civilians early last month. Stark lines have been drawn as people around the world have protested in support of both sides in an escalating war with Israel at the center of the conflict.
Streets of major cities and campuses of colleges across the country have been overrun with people exercising their right to freedoms only found in America. Free speech in America has allowed both sides to openly shout their opinions on the matter over the past few weeks.
Even under the U.S. Constitution, people can’t push beyond the boundaries of free speech. No one can yell, “Fire!” in a crowded theater and protestors can’t threaten to violently harm those with whom they disagree. One university student found out the hard way that violent words have consequences.

Federal authorities arrested a Cornell University student on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened extreme violence against the school’s Jewish community on a website unaffiliated with the upstate New York Ivy League campus last weekend.
Patrick Dai, 21, a junior at the university, was arrested on a federal criminal complaint charging him with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications. Dai faces a maximum term of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a term of supervised release of up to three years if convicted.
The complaint alleges Dai, originally from Pittsford, New York, alleges he spouted off threatening messages within the Cornell area of an online chat site. He allegedly called for the deaths of Jewish people and carrying out a mass shooting. His alleged target for the mass shooting was a Cornell University dining hall that caters predominantly to Kosher diets and is located next to the Cornell Jewish Center.
Cornell officials condemned the antisemitic threats and called for those responsible to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. These comments appear contradictory to the Cornell position of still employing a professor who claimed he was “exhilarated” by the Hamas attacks.
Since Hamas terrorists killed more than 1,400 people on Oct. 7, threats against Jewish communities in the U.S. continue to rise, according to Anti-Defamation League reports. The Israel-Hamas war entered its fourth week over the weekend and the conflict has sparked a wave of anti-Semitism from supporters of Hamas. This includes the mass protests in U.S cities and on campuses across the country.
