The men and women who charged into those burning towers didn’t pause to debate whether American foreign policy justified the slaughter. They went in because innocent people were dying. 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers never walked back out.

You’d think that distinction – murderers versus heroes – would be permanently settled by now. Apparently not in New York City, where a self-described socialist mayor and his inner circle have spent years muddying the waters. On Wednesday, someone finally stepped to the microphone and said what desperately needed saying. She said it with the mayor seated right next to her.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called for “moral clarity” ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks as city officials unveiled a new memorial wall at One Police Plaza on Wednesday.

Tisch, alongside Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other city officials, unveiled the wall, which includes 469 names commemorating NYPD police officers who died from illnesses related to Ground Zero. Addressing families of 9/11 first responders, Tisch said that “Preserving that history also means preserving its moral clarity.”

Commissioner Tisch wasn’t finished. Standing before the families of officers who gave everything, she put it plainly: “The men who attacked this city were terrorists. The men and women who ran into the towers to save innocent lives were heroes. Twenty-five years cannot be allowed to blur that distinction and shame on those who do.”

Mamdani sat stone-faced. Several attendees told the New York Post they read the remarks as a direct rebuke of the mayor. “It definitely sounded like she took a shot at the mayor, especially after the pen incident last week,” one said. The Port Authority Retired Police Association fired off a letter to Mamdani declaring his presence at Ground Zero would “cause profound pain to members of the 9/11 community and risk turning a solemn day of remembrance into a political controversy.”

Last month, Mamdani was booed relentlessly at an NYPD event on Staten Island. At a subsequent FDNY commemoration, he notably kept his mouth shut. Retired officers, 9/11 families, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former Governor George Pataki have all urged him to skip today’s ceremony.

Then there’s the company he keeps. Mamdani campaigned alongside far-left internet personality Hasan Piker – a man who declared on camera that “America deserved 9/11.” That single association should disqualify any politician from standing at Ground Zero and pretending to grieve alongside the people who actually lost someone.

Moral clarity is not bigotry

Right on schedule, Mamdani’s allies trotted out the Islamophobia card. Brooklyn Councilman Lincoln Restler insisted the backlash exists solely “because he is Muslim.” Spare us. This is dishonest deflection, and everyone outside a Brooklyn council meeting knows it. The criticism targets the mayor’s associations, his appointments, and his stubborn refusal to draw an unambiguous line between those who attacked America and those who defended her.

There are 469 names on that new memorial wall at One Police Plaza. They belong to NYPD officers who spent weeks breathing poison at Ground Zero. They developed cancers. They suffered slow, agonizing declines. They died serving a city whose mayor now hands ceremonial pens to defenders of al-Qaeda operatives.

Those officers never wondered whether America had it coming. They ran in. Commissioner Tisch honored their sacrifice with three words New York’s mayor could never bring himself to utter: Shame on you.
