Supreme Court Rules On 2020 Census – They Just Gave President Trump The Power To Put A Stop To It Now

The Supreme Court just made a major decision in the heat of the election season.

The Trump administration’s argued that the census headcount needed to end immediately, so the Census Bureau had enough time to crunch the numbers.

If those numbers aren’t accurate, it poses a problem on a congressional level—these statistics help determine how many congressional seats each state gets.

That’s why the Trump administration asked the court to stop the census before October 31.

Here’s how they ruled. From Fox News:

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday sided with the Trump administration to not extend the census count instead of allowing it to continue through the end of October.

A few local governments and civil rights groups won’t like this decision.

They’d previously sued the Trump administration for attempting to shut down the census, arguing that minorities and “hard-to-count communities” would be missed if the count ended too soon.

They further contended that Trump just wanted to exclude people who were in the country illegally.

These groups scored a victory last month, when U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in the Northern District of California issued an injunction, which would allow the Census to continue its count through Oct. 31.

However, the Supreme Court won’t allow that to stand.

The next step for the Trump administration is an appeal regarding the aforementioned undocumented residents.

A federal appeals court in New York struck down an order that would’ve excluded undocumented immigrants from the census count. Now, Trump’s team is appealing that ruling.

In the meantime, though, they’ve at least earned a victory from the highest court in the land. The Census count cannot continue, a ruling many Democrats are sure to contend.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Supreme Court has given the Trump administration a victory.
  • The Court granted Trump’s request to end the Census count immediately, rather than continuing it through Oct. 31.
  • Trump’s team said the counting needed to stop now, so the Census Bureau would have enough time to accurately crunch the numbers.
