It’s not uncommon to hear political candidates make wild promises to voters. Rarely do they seem interested in making good on those promises, once they enter office. A popular topic among liberal candidates is the nation’s minimum wage.

Currently, the minimum wage is $7.50 an hour. But many states have set higher ones. And many companies start workers at a higher rate.

Democrats have long demanded a $ 15-an-hour minimum wage. Some have gone even higher, heedless of how that would hurt small businesses. Now, a Democrat running for Senate out of California has made this minimum wage demand. You’re not going to believe this.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) said during a debate this week for one of California’s U.S. Senate seats that it makes sense to raise the minimum wage to $50 an hour…

“In the Bay Area, I believe it was the United Way that came out with a report that very recently $127,000 for a family of four is just barely enough to get by…”

“Just do the math! Just do the math!” she continued.

One might ask Lee to do the math herself. She is calling for a $50 an hour minimum wage. That would result in a six-figure salary for entry-level workers. Her argument is based on data from one group. The United Way, according to Lee, stated that a six-figure salary is just enough “to get by” for a family of four in the Bay Area.

The Bay Area, as you might know, has a notoriously high cost of living. So much so, that many have fled the region because it is too expensive. That is due in part to high taxes and other legislation that has driven up the cost of homes.

In the vast majority of the country, six-figure salaries are not required for Americans to support their families (although that might not be the case if Biden continues to drive up inflation!). Yet Lee is making a demand for low-skilled workers to be paid higher than many college-educated employees.

This is nothing new for Democrat politicians. They have long made demands that would put a huge strain on companies, like higher wages, increased taxes, and heavy fines and regulations.

Some Democrats, including socialists like Bernie Sanders, seem to think that companies have limitless stores of cash. They often ignore the fallout of wage hikes, like higher prices, closed businesses, and layoffs.
