There’s something poetic about an actor reading lines someone else wrote and expecting America to take it as gospel truth. But every election cycle, right on schedule, Hollywood dusts off a new script – and finds a familiar face willing to deliver it with a straight face and a clenched fist.

This midterm season has been no exception. For months, Democrats have been constructing a narrative we’ve all heard before: the elections aren’t safe, the system is rigged, and the other side can’t be trusted. Former Vice President Kamala Harris got the ball rolling in August, releasing a video claiming Trump and Republicans were “trying to cheat” and urging supporters to make results “too big to rig.”

Funny how that works. These are the same people who spent years branding Republican concerns about election integrity as “dangerous conspiracy theories.” Questioning elections, it turns out, is only a threat to democracy when the other team does it.

Now the campaign has its leading man. Robert De Niro surfaced Thursday in a political ad for the progressive group Indivisible’s “Hands Off Our Vote” campaign. His mission? Urge Americans to vote early because of what “they” – meaning the Trump administration – might do on Election Day.

From Fox News:

There are some powerful people who want to take away that power. This is Robert De Niro, and I’ve got a message for them: No f—ing way. We’re fighting them in the courts and standing up to them in the streets. Whether by mail or in person, you control when, and then, no matter what they pull on Election Day, your vote will already be banked.

Compelling cinema. Less compelling argument. De Niro offered precisely zero evidence of any planned interference. No specifics. No documentation. Just vague fearmongering wrapped in tough-guy bravado. The White House, for its part, didn’t mince words. Spokesman Davis Ingle called De Niro “a washed up has-been who hasn’t been relevant in 30 years” who should “seek help to treat his severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Brutal – but honestly, not unearned.

The projection problem

Here’s where it gets particularly absurd. While Democrats recruit aging movie stars to howl about stolen elections, they simultaneously torpedo every meaningful election security measure that hits the floor. Voter ID requirements? They oppose them. The SAVE Act mandating proof of citizenship? Dead on arrival. Basic questions about irregularities? That’s “voter suppression.”

Sen. Mike Lee nailed it: “It is Democrats bending over backwards to prevent voter ID and proof of citizenship for American elections. It is Democrats demanding that nobody ask questions about election security and irregularities. The projection is jaw-dropping.”

Hard to argue with that.

What Americans actually want

Look, I didn’t need Robert De Niro to tell me how or when to cast my ballot. The Americans I talk to want something remarkably simple: secure elections where every legal vote counts and every illegal one doesn’t. No Hollywood dramatics required.

De Niro can keep reading his scripts. The rest of us will keep showing up at the ballot box – confident that fighting for election integrity means fighting for every American, not just the ones with a SAG card.

Key Takeaways

  • De Niro’s ad delivers fear and profanity but zero evidence of election interference
  • Democrats block voter ID and the SAVE Act while crying foul about election security
  • The party that called election concerns “conspiracy theories” now peddles its own
  • Americans want secure, transparent elections – not lectures from Hollywood
