Report Details Terror-Linked Group Connections Involving Family of Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed

Americans have always expected honesty from the people who want to represent them. Not perfection – just straight answers. When someone stands before voters and asks for a seat in the United States Senate, those voters have every right to scrutinize that person’s background. Their associations. Their family ties. Especially when those ties brush up against national security.

And yet, certain candidates glide through the vetting process untouched. The same press corps that will dissect a Republican’s college thesis down to the footnotes develops a sudden, convenient disinterest when a progressive favorite carries baggage that would torch anyone on the right. A new report has now exposed exactly this kind of baggage attached to a Michigan Senate hopeful – and the questions it raises are serious.

From The Post Millennial:

The mother of progressive Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed worked for an Islamic relief organization that was later designated by the US government for supporting terrorism over allegations that its international network provided financial assistance to Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and Hamas, according to a new report.

El-Sayed’s birth mother, Fatten Fathy Elkomy, worked for the Islamic American Relief Agency (IARA) from 1999 until at least 2004, according to documents reported by The Midwesterner. The Treasury Department designated IARA in October 2004, blocking its assets over alleged connections to terrorist organizations.

A trail that leads to bin Laden

These aren’t vague accusations from political opponents. They come straight from the United States Treasury Department. And the language is blunt: “Information available to the U.S. shows that the overseas branches IARA provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to UBL in 1999.” UBL – that’s government shorthand for Osama bin Laden.

No clerical technicality here. Federal officials alleged IARA’s international network provided support benefiting Hamas and the Taliban. The organization was eventually prosecuted for sanctions violations and pleaded guilty to conspiring to transfer nearly $1.4 million to Iraq. By the time it agreed to dissolve in 2016, its assets had been so thoroughly frozen that it couldn’t even pay a fine.

Elkomy publicly defended her IARA work after the designation, telling the St. Louis Post-Dispatch she had been “serving orphans and children with at least one deceased parent.” Perhaps she was. But the organization writing her paychecks was simultaneously routing money to the man who orchestrated the murder of nearly 3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001. That’s not a minor detail on a résumé.

It doesn’t stop with his mother

If this were one isolated family connection, you might grant some grace. But it’s not isolated. Not even close.

El-Sayed’s father-in-law, Dr. Jukaku Tayeb, has held leadership positions with CAIR-Michigan and the Islamic Society of North America. Both organizations were named as unindicted co-conspirators in the federal prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation – a case that ended in convictions for funneling millions of dollars to Hamas. Federal court records have also identified ISNA as having historical ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Mother. Father-in-law. Two distinct connections to organizations entangled in terror financing cases brought by the federal government. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a pattern, and patterns deserve scrutiny.

Michigan voters deserve answers

Here’s where it gets particularly rich. El-Sayed – the same man surrounded by these family connections to terror-linked organizations – has built his political brand on calling to abolish ICE. Think about that for a moment. He wants to dismantle the very federal enforcement apparatus that works alongside Treasury and the DOJ to shut down terror financing networks like the ones his own family members were connected to.

Meanwhile, according to reports, El-Sayed has carefully stage-managed his personal story throughout his political career. He frequently discusses his father and stepmother in public. His birth mother? Almost never mentioned. You don’t have to be a cynic to find that conspicuous.

Has a single mainstream journalist in Michigan pressed him on any of this? Has any editorial board demanded he explain these documented family ties? Because if a Republican Senate candidate’s mother had worked for an organization that funneled cash to Osama bin Laden, every anchor in America would be leading with it at six o’clock. The double standard isn’t subtle. It’s brazen.

The question here isn’t whether Abdul El-Sayed committed a crime. It’s whether a man asking to represent Michigan in Washington will level with voters about the associations that surround him. Transparency isn’t a courtesy when you’re running for the Senate. It’s a baseline requirement. And on matters involving organizations that financed terrorism against Americans, silence isn’t caution – it’s a disqualification.

Key Takeaways

  • El-Sayed’s birth mother worked for an organization the U.S. designated for funding Osama bin Laden and Hamas.
  • His father-in-law led groups named as unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation terror financing trial.
  • El-Sayed wants to abolish ICE while his own family has ties to terror-linked organizations.
  • Michigan voters and the national press owe the public real answers – not silence.
