Every year, more than 40 million people pass through Minnesota’s Mall of America. Families with strollers. Teenagers burning through gift cards. Grandparents spoiling the grandkids over lunch. It’s the kind of ordinary American experience most of us take for granted – which is exactly why jihadists find it so attractive. Radical Islamic terrorism never packed up and left our shores. It just stopped making headlines while the plotters kept busy.

The Trump administration has made counterterrorism a front-burner priority again, and the numbers prove it. But threats like these don’t spring from nowhere. They are the downstream product of immigration policy choices made over decades – choices about who enters this country, how thoroughly we vet them, and what festers in the communities that form afterward. A federal case out of Minnesota this week drives that point home with brutal clarity.

From The Post Millennial:

Federal authorities announced on Wednesday that they have arrested and charged a man for planning a mass terrorist attack at the Mall of America in Minnesota. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, was arrested on Tuesday, and had planned to carry out the attack in support of ISIS, prosecutors said.

US Attorney Daniel Rosen said at a press conference that “Mohamud has been charged with acquiring an AK-47 assault rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition in order to commit a federal crime of terrorism, including attempting to provide material support to ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization.” He said that Mohamud planned to kill, “in his words, 30 to 60 people.”

Thirty to sixty Americans. Shopping for sneakers, watching their kids ride the carousel, grabbing a pretzel. That was the target. Not a military installation. A mall.

A massacre in the making

The FBI had been watching Mohamud since December 2024. He initially wanted to travel overseas and join ISIS or al-Shabaab – the Somalia-based terror outfit – but couldn’t scrape together the airfare. So he improvised. He chose October 24 as his attack date because the Mall of America was hosting a Hmong Arts Celebration that day. Big crowd. Maximum carnage. He even studied previous American mass shootings as a blueprint. Think about that for a moment – an 18-year-old reviewing past atrocities like game film.

In encrypted messages with an FBI confidential source, Mohamud wrote: “I can’t wait until I kill kuffar man. October 24 is the day insha Allah.” He recorded a selfie-style video pledging allegiance to ISIS and its leader. On October 6, he showed up to buy an AK-47-style rifle, four magazines, and roughly 200 rounds of ammunition from someone he believed was an ISIS operative. He paid $600 cash. The seller was actually an undercover FBI employee. Mohamud grabbed the duffel bag and walked straight into a wall of federal agents.

Credit where it’s due

Good work deserves recognition. The FBI ran a disciplined, 22-month investigation and neutralized a deadly threat without a single innocent person getting hurt. That’s textbook counterterrorism.

FBI Director Kash Patel laid out the broader picture: under current leadership, the Bureau has prevented over 1,100 individuals from carrying out attacks and achieved more than 4,000 foreign terrorist organization-related disruptions and arrests – a 38% jump. President Trump was characteristically direct: “They did a great job. The FBI did a great job.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson asked the question everyone should be asking: “What would happen if that 18-year-old had made it into that mall?” We already know the answer. We’ve seen it before.

This is what a focused FBI looks like – one chasing actual terrorists instead of surveilling parents at school board meetings.

The pipeline no one wants to discuss

Here’s the part that makes certain people uncomfortable. Mohamud was born in the United States. He’s a citizen. But his parents are Somali nationals who arrived through a New York City airport in 2000 and later became naturalized. Minnesota’s sizable Somali community – built through decades of federal refugee resettlement – has been a documented recruiting pipeline for ISIS and al-Shabaab for over ten years. Pretending otherwise isn’t compassion. It’s negligence.

Governor Tim Walz praised law enforcement for their “swift and professional action.” Gracious of him. But Walz and his fellow Democrats have spent years championing expanded refugee admissions, opposing enhanced vetting, and fighting border enforcement at virtually every opportunity. They applaud the arrest on Wednesday and obstruct the prevention policies the other 364 days of the year.

If Democrats reclaim the White House, expect that pipeline to widen considerably – and expect the FBI’s attention to be redirected away from the threats that actually endanger American families.

The system worked this time. An alert Bureau, operating under leadership that grasps the stakes, stopped a massacre before it started. But “this time” is a phrase no American family should have to depend on. Elections matter. Complacency kills.

Key Takeaways

  • The FBI foiled a planned ISIS-inspired mass shooting at Minnesota’s Mall of America, arresting suspect Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud.
  • Under Trump-era leadership, the FBI has disrupted over 4,000 terror-related threats – a 38% increase.
  • Minnesota’s Somali refugee community remains a documented recruiting ground for ISIS and al-Shabaab.
  • Democratic immigration policies risk expanding the very pipeline that fuels homegrown radicalization.
