The Gettysburg National Park is one of the most sacred spots in the United States. It is meant to protect the battlefield where over 7,000 American soldiers were killed during the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place from July 1-3, 1863.

That’s why it came as a disturbing shock to learn that Gettysburg National Park has been vandalized multiple times throughout this month. It’s horrifying to think that anyone would think it’s acceptable to desecrate such hallowed ground.

Sadly, this appears to be a symptom of the times we are living in. Democrats have made disrespecting America the norm while simultaneously making patriotism seem to be out of style. Gettysburg National Park appears to be now paying the price for that.

On August 15, park officials reported that multiple boulders had been defaced with graffiti inscribed onto the faces of large stones on Little Round Top, the National Park Services (NPS) reported. The second incident took place on August 19, when visitors of the historic site reported that graffiti had been spray-painted on the historic War Department Observation Tower.

Medal of Honor recipient Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain led his men on a bayonet charge down Little Round Top that saved the Union line and helped preserve Union victory in the Civil War.

“It’s safe to say that our hearts sank to see that something like this had been done here on the hallowed ground of Gettysburg,” Jason Martz, Gettysburg National Military Park’s communication specialist, told Fox 43. “This area hasn’t seen a whole lot of foot traffic for the better part of two years. It was very disheartening to see and discover that something like this had been done.”

The Tragedy Of Gettysburg Being Vandalized

Little Round Top had only reopened to the public at the end of June. Before that, it had been closed for renovations for nearly two years. That made the vandalization that took place this month even more disheartening.

Thankfully, park preservationists were able to remove any trace of the vandalization within just a few days. They had feared that the graffiti would be there forever, so it came as a relief when they were able to do this so quickly. Police have also identified a suspect. If convicted, this unnamed person is facing six months in jail or a fine of up to $5,000.

If you ask us, whoever did this deserves a far harsher sentence, but we digress!

While that all comes as good news, it’s still both disturbing and sickening that this vandalization ever happened in the first place. Many would argue that America hasn’t been as divided as it is right now since the Civil War. That makes it all the more tragic that a place like Gettysburg National Park would be targeted at this harrowing time in American history.

We are, unfortunately, living in a time in which Americans are less patriotic than they have been in recent memory. The vandalization of Gettysburg National Park serves as a reminder of just how crucial it is that the American people turn this around by coming together. If we don’t find a way to unify, history may soon repeat itself, and our country could once again be hit with a Civil War.

Let’s hope and pray that nothing like what happened at Gettysburg ever happens again in this nation.
