If Joe Biden wants to force his agenda through Congress, he’ll need the support of every Democrat.
That’s especially true in the Senate, where they hold a very slim “majority.” If just one Democrat breaks rank, then they won’t be able to pass legislation.
Many eyes are on West Virginia’s Joe Manchin, a “moderate” Democrat from a red state.
Instead of trying to get Manchin on their side, the Biden administration just pulled a power move. They sent Harris over to do a local interview to strongarm Manchin’s support of their $1.9 trillion bill.
He wasn’t happy. From The Daily Caller:
Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin appeared to be unpleased with an interview Vice President Kamala Harris gave to a local TV network in West Virginia, claiming the White House never notified him…
“I saw [the interview], I couldn’t believe it. No one called me,” Manchin told WSAZ. “We’re going to try to find a bipartisan pathway forward, but we need to work together. That’s not a way of working together.”
While what Manchin ends up doing is uncertain, he has frequently vowed to pursue bipartisan efforts in recent months.
As a moderate from a conservative state, he is unlikely to endorse radical plans. He has also questioned the value of Biden’s huge $1.9 trillion COVID bill. Like many other critics, he pointed out that the cost might be too high and the money might not get to those who need it.
(Which is a common problem with government spending.)
Harris pulled a power play by going to West Virginia and plugging this bill. That was a clear attempt to put pressure on Manchin to back a bill he doesn’t seem to like.
Manchin bashed the administration, saying no one told him about the interview. He, again, talked about finding a bipartisan solution to our problems—and criticized Harris’s interview.
The senator said that was “not a way of working” together, suggesting the White House is going rogue against the Senate.
This might suggest Manchin will defy his party and vote against this bill, in protest to this move. Or, he might cower to the intimidation and vote to keep Biden happy.
Then again, this might all be political theater. In the past, Cruz has slammed “fights” between AOC and Manchin, calling it political theater.
Do you think Manchin really wants to find bipartisan solutions?
