The third anniversary of the October 7th massacre should have been straightforward. More than 1,200 innocent Israelis were slaughtered by Hamas terrorists in the deadliest attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust. Hostages were dragged into tunnels. Children lost parents, and parents lost children. Commemorating that horror demands one thing from a leader – the basic decency to call evil what it is and grieve alongside those who suffered. That shouldn’t be a tall order for any American official, much less the mayor of a city home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel.

Yet in New York City, the anniversary became something else entirely – a clinic in progressive equivocation, where condolences came with conditions and grief arrived stapled to a political manifesto. What followed was a backlash so broad it managed to unite Israeli diplomats, Democratic congressmen, Reform rabbis, and one very unlikely voice from the world of late-night television.

From the Daily Wire:

Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher gave New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani an earful over his “tone deaf” comments marking the third anniversary of the horrific October 7th massacre.

Maher used his monologue to rip into the self-described democratic socialist, who issued a statement that gave lip service to the suffering of Israeli civilians at the hands of Hamas terrorists from Gaza before blaming Israel directly for the broader conflict.

Bill Maher is many things. A conservative is not one of them. Yet on his Friday night HBO show, he managed to diagnose what Mamdani’s own advisors apparently could not. “Mayor Mamdani, not all that sympathetic to this stuff, but he did make some nice remarks about it,” Maher said. “But then he pivoted right to, ‘but Israel made them do it.'”

Then he landed the punchline. Referencing Mamdani’s past attempts at a rap career, Maher quipped: “You know, he used to be a rapper. His rap name was ‘Tone Deaf.'” For the record, Mamdani performed under the names “Young Cardamom” and “Mr. Cardamom.” Maher’s rebrand fits better.

The pivot that said everything

The mayor’s actual statement deserves scrutiny. Mamdani opened by acknowledging that Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others, calling the attack “horrific war crimes.” Respectful enough. Then came the turn. “The suffering did not begin nor end that day,” the statement continued, before careening into accusations of Israeli “genocide,” claims of 74,000 Palestinian deaths, and a declaration that American tax dollars fund “war crimes.”

The blowback was immediate – and it came from his own side of the aisle. Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman of New York called the statement “reprehensible,” writing that Mamdani “asserts as fact hotly disputed allegations that he knows full well will offend and further upset those same people he pretends to grieve with.” Hard to argue with a Democrat when he’s right.

Ofir Akunis, Israel’s consul general in New York, was blunter, calling it “a disgrace, shame, and insult to the memory of those who were murdered on October 7.” Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, offered perhaps the most sobering assessment. Mamdani, Jacobs said, had “doubled down” and “failed to see how his deeply held beliefs endanger New Yorkers.”

The mob is never satisfied

If Mamdani assumed his statement would at least placate his progressive base, he guessed wrong. When the mayor attended a candlelight vigil at Union Square organized by an Israeli peace group, anti-Israel protesters descended on the event, waving Palestinian flags and shouting “Zohran, your hands are red!” They branded him a traitor. Their proposed remedy? Fire Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Her offense, apparently, is being Jewish. Ponder the raw antisemitism of that demand from people who insist they aren’t antisemitic.

Even Brad Lander, the Jewish politician who allied with Mamdani during the mayoral race, was jeered when he spoke about the shared humanity of mothers grieving on all sides. The radical fringe doesn’t want nuance or mourning. It wants total submission. Anything less earns you the same contempt they reserve for their declared enemies.

Clarity shouldn’t require courage

Condemning a terrorist massacre on its anniversary used to be the lowest possible bar for public leadership. No bravery required. That a liberal comedian on HBO displayed sharper moral instincts than the mayor of America’s greatest city tells you just how far the progressive movement has wandered from basic decency.

Rabbi Jacobs warned that Mamdani’s rhetoric endangers New Yorkers. He’s right – but the danger stretches well beyond one city. When leaders cannot distinguish between terrorists and their victims without appending a political lecture, they have surrendered the moral authority their office demands. Americans in New York and everywhere else deserve better than grief with an asterisk.

Key Takeaways

  • Mamdani exploited the October 7th anniversary to shift blame from Hamas to Israel.
  • Liberal Bill Maher demonstrated more moral clarity than New York’s progressive mayor.
  • Bipartisan backlash – including from fellow Democrats – exposed the statement’s recklessness.
  • Pro-Hamas protesters still rejected Mamdani, proving radical appeasement always backfires.
