Meals on Wheels Forced to Close Portland Location Over Crime and Safety Concerns

Remember when our big cities were places you actually wanted to visit? They were symbols of American success. People worked hard. They built communities. And you could walk down the street without worrying. That simple promise was the foundation of our country.

But let’s be honest. That promise is gone in too many places. It’s been replaced by a crazy idea that calls itself “compassion” but looks a lot like chaos. And this isn’t some accident. It’s what happens when you let politicians run cities into the ground with their social experiments. Are we really surprised this is the result?

I’m talking about Portland, Oregon. The city has become a poster child for this failure. And the latest victim isn’t some big corporation that can just pack up and leave. It’s a group that everyone, and I mean everyone, respects: Meals on Wheels. They had to shut down their downtown center because the city is just too dangerous.

From ‘The Post Millennial’:

The non-profit organization Meals on Wheels has said that it is done with downtown Portland. The organization provides food to seniors who are homebound but it has recently shut down two facilities, including one in downtown Portland, over crime and safety concerns…

“I can’t keep our staff safe and our volunteers safe because there’s always something happening,” [Meals on Wheels Chief Executive Officer Suzanne Washington] said. “We’ve been threatened with knives, and fires have been set. It was time to close.”

A Sanctuary Under Siege

Think about that for a second. An organization that brings food to grandma and grandpa had to run away. Why? Because the city has become a playground for criminals. The CEO said her team had to step over human waste and needles every single day.

It gets worse. I had to read this twice to believe it. She said her staff once had to step over a dead body just to get into the building. A dead body. This isn’t some third-world country. This is an American city. The good people trying to help were put in danger, while the thugs and addicts were protected. Does that sound like a healthy society to you?

The Poisonous Fruit of Progressive Policy

This didn’t just happen overnight. This is the result of years of bad decisions made by people who think they know better than all of us. They decriminalized hard drugs. They let prosecutors look the other way. They treated the police like the bad guys.

What did they think was going to happen? They created a paradise for criminals, and now the good guys can’t even operate. A place that once gave seniors a chance to connect with others is now gone. This is what the Left’s version of “compassion” gets you—a city so broken that even a charity has to board up its windows.

The story of Meals on Wheels in Portland is a warning for every American. Real compassion isn’t about letting criminals run wild. It’s about having a safe society where good people can do good things. When a city can’t even protect the people who feed the elderly, it has completely and utterly failed.

Key Takeaways

  • Progressive policies directly lead to the decay and lawlessness seen in American cities.
  • Failed leadership creates environments where vital charities can no longer operate safely.
  • The most vulnerable citizens, like the elderly, are the ultimate victims of these policies.
  • A society cannot be compassionate without first establishing basic law and order.
