The Internet erupted after Biden’s DHS announced it was building new border fencing across the U.S.-Mexico border. Alejandro Mayorkas, head of the DHS, wrote the announcement himself, admitting the administration had failed to protect the border.
The agency will be waiving 26 federal laws to quickly build new border protections. As expected, the liberal establishment was shocked. The mainstream media demanded answers. Biden had long vowed to never build more border wall.
Now, it appears the administration is scrambling to spin the news. Mayorkas has come out, criticizing conservative outlets who reported on his own announcement. It appears the administration is claiming they had “no choice” but to build the wall.

“From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer,” he said…“The construction project reported today was appropriated during the prior administration in 2019 and the law requires the government to use these funds for this purpose, which we announced earlier this year,” he continued. “We have repeatedly asked Congress to rescind this money but it has not done so and we are compelled to follow the law.”
Mayorkas appears to be speaking out of both sides of his mouth. In his announcement, he highlighted the administration’s failures on the border, citing the millions of migrants who entered the country.
His announcement called for “physical barriers and roads” that would “prevent unlawful entries.” In the same breath, however, he claimed that “a border wall is not the answer” and that the administration’s policy has not changed.
Mayorkas is claiming the White House essentially has no choice but to use funds appropriated in 2019 to build the wall. By law, he is saying, the administration has to build the border fencing.
Many Americans will point out the obvious contradiction in Mayorkas’ statements. He said border walls do not work, but is now speeding up the building of a border wall to keep out illegal entrants. The administration claims they are doing this because of funds from 2019. Yet Biden shut down border construction in 2021 and has neglected the situation for nearly three years.
Perhaps the sudden change in policy has more to do with dragging poll numbers and a Democrat revolt?
