President Trump has made his position unmistakable: decades of lopsided trade arrangements with Ottawa are finished, and he’s putting real policy muscle behind that promise.

Now, when a president takes bold action on the world stage, his opponents face a choice. They can engage on substance, offer a competing vision, or at minimum demonstrate they understand the stakes. Or – and I’m sure you can guess where this is heading – they can whip out a smartphone and post something deeply unimpressive.

Illinois’ left-wing Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker mocked the Trump administration Thursday after the White House announced that Lake Ontario would be renamed “Lake America.”

“EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Trump Tower is renamed to NATALIE TOWER!” Pritzker wrote on X.

Pritzker was referring to Natalie Harp, 35, one of Trump’s closest aides. Harp has served as Trump’s executive assistant since the start of his second term.

The governor of one of America’s most fiscally distressed states saw a presidential executive order grounded in trade policy and national investment – and his best swing was a quip about the president’s executive assistant. Whatever applause Pritzker envisioned, what he actually received was a thorough drubbing from the entire internet.

Maybe he should have read the order first. Trump’s executive action directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update Lake Ontario’s name to “Lake America” in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. It arrived after trade negotiations with Canada cratered, after the administration announced a 50 percent tariff on Canadian automobiles and steel set to begin next year, and after years of what the White House describes as deeply lopsided burden-sharing on the Great Lakes. The order notes that the U.S. Coast Guard operates nine of the eleven icebreakers keeping commercial shipping lanes open – free of charge – and that American taxpayers have poured nearly $4 billion into Great Lakes protection over the past decade. Canada’s contribution? Considerably less.

That is the substance behind the symbolism. Pritzker apparently couldn’t be bothered with any of it.

Think about it. A billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune – a man whose family name adorns museums, hospitals, and institutions across the country – decided to mock someone else’s naming conventions. When your own family allegedly hasn’t paid property taxes on a major Chicago hotel in nearly three decades, perhaps the tweet about towers should have stayed in the drafts folder. Just a thought.

Pritzker wasn’t the only Democratic governor auditioning for amateur hour, either. Wisconsin’s Tony Evers posted a video of himself at a McDonald’s, signing a napkin to “rename” Lake Michigan as “Lake Wisconsin.” Hilarious stuff. Really sharp political commentary from the party that wants you to trust them with the economy.

Where’s the counter-proposal?

Here’s what genuinely nags at me about this whole spectacle. When President Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America on his first day back in office, Democrats mocked that decision relentlessly. The name stuck. The world adjusted. The underlying policy kept advancing without pause.

The pattern is repeating. Trump signs executive orders. Democratic governors sign napkins. Trump leverages naming authority as one piece of a broader trade strategy supported by real economic data – $4 billion in infrastructure, icebreaker fleets, collapsed negotiations. His opponents leverage Twitter for engagement metrics. So where, exactly, is the Democratic counter-proposal on trade with Canada? Where is any serious policy engagement from leaders like Pritzker, who govern states hemorrhaging residents and sinking under pension liabilities?

Illinois has staggering real-world problems – crushing debt, persistent outmigration, deteriorating public safety. Its governor might consider investing less energy in crafting tweets and more in addressing why his constituents keep relocating to Florida and Texas.
