Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been called a “spoiler” in this year’s election. But the independent candidate has claimed that Joe Biden is the real “spoiler,” claiming only he can beat Donald Trump.
It seems that the moderate candidate is fighting hard to take votes away from Joe Biden.
While some of his policies are similar to Trump’s, RFK selected a liberal running mate and has recently pushed views that will be welcomed by left-leaning voters. He was recently interviewed by former ESPN anchor Sage Steele. She asked the candidate about his views on one major issue. And his answer might shock many Americans.
From Fox News:
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says he opposes any government restrictions on abortions, “even if it’s full term.”…“I think there’s a really, really good argument, a compelling argument, that the state has an interest in protecting a fully-formed fetus. I absolutely think that that argument is very convincing. But again, I come down to the fact that I don’t trust the state,” Kennedy said. “I think we need to trust the woman and I don’t think that that’s a satisfactory outcome, because there’s always gonna be instances where bad things happen.”
In what might turn away many conservative voters, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. revealed he was not in favor of the government putting restrictions on abortions. Instead, he said a woman should be able to make the decision for herself, not even the states.
This policy certainly aligns with pro-choice liberals and will shock moderate Republicans who were considering Kennedy as an alternative to Trump. Abortion could be a major issue going into 2024. Ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Democrats have used abortion as a major platform issue.
Even Trump has revised his views, conceding exceptions to abortion bans to keep moderates on his side.
Kennedy did state that “every abortion is a tragedy”—a stark contrast to many pro-choice advocates who “shout” their abortions. He also hinted that he would implement policies as president to “combat the number of abortions in the U.S.” Yet in the end he said that the decision needs to be left with the woman “her pastor” or her “spiritual advisors.”
It’s unknown how this stance will resonate with voters. While liberals might like Kennedy’s view, it could mean that he’s against states passing pro-choice laws. He might even be against federal funding for Planned Parenthood. His anti-government view might also win over libertarians, who strongly oppose government intervention.

- He said, “every abortion is a tragedy,” but the decision should be left to a woman and her “spiritual advisors.”
