Senate Defectors Shut Down Democrats – Stop Last-Minute Biden Pick from Going Through

In the weeks since Election Day, Democrats have gone into full panic mode. Indeed, November 5 was a rough one for them. Not only did they lose the presidency to their arch-nemesis, Donald Trump, but they also lost both the Senate and the House.

Since effectively losing all of their power for at least the next two years, Democrats have been frantically trying to push through as much of their agenda as they can at the last minute. That’s why, on Wednesday, they launched a desperate last-ditch effort to keep control of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

On his way out, Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was eager to confirm Lauren McFerran, Joe Biden’s pick for the board’s current chair. He wanted to confirm her to a new five-year term that would allow Democrats to keep control of the powerful NLRB through at least 2026.

Unfortunately for Schumer and his fellow Democrats, however, Republicans weren’t about to let that happen.

From Fox News:
Outgoing Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had hoped to confirm McFerran, a President Biden pick, to a new five-year term that would have given Democrats control of the influential agency until at least 2026, but the vote failed, 50-49, with independent Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona voting against it.

The vote, which conservatives had railed against for days by arguing that President-elect Trump should decide the pick after his November election victory, was celebrated by conservatives.

“Working Americans just delivered a massive victory for President Trump and his pro-worker polices, so why on earth would we let Biden choose more NLRB nominees?” Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., told Fox News Digital in a statement. “I’m glad we didn’t, and I look forward to working with President Trump to support policies and nominees that are good for working families and all Americans.”

How humiliating! Schumer really wanted this 11th hour win, but he was blocked, not just by Republicans, but by defectors Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema.

Talk about salt in the wound. Even moderate Democrats are done with their party’s games. They recognize that the working class swung hard for Trump in 2024, and they’re not going to sneak around and go against the will of the people.

Both Manchin and Sinema are days away from leaving the Senate, and it looks like they would like to leave with a clean conscience. They don’t have to worry about currying favor for re-election bids, and they both seem sick and tired of the Washington Swamp.

Republicans Blocked ‘Schumer’s Scheme’

Tom Hebert, director of competition and regulatory policy for Americans for Tax Reform, also spoke out to celebrate this. He pointed out that McFerran has had an “abysmal record” running the NLRB and called her out for “undermining freelancers, crushing businesses of all sizes, and green-lighting vulgar union harassment of American workers.”

Hebert concluded by praising Republicans for blocking “Schumer’s scheme, ensuring the Trump-Vance NLRB is controlled by pro-worker Republicans instead of anti-worker Democrats.”

In response to the McFerran vote, Schumer effectively threw a temper tantrum with a whiny statement. It clearly hit a nerve for him that he fell just one vote short of achieving his goal in this endeavor.

“It is deeply disappointing, a direct attack on working people, and incredibly troubling that this highly qualified nominee – with a proven track record of protecting worker rights – did not have the votes,” Schumer said.

Schumer and his fellow Democrats will have to get used to not getting their way. They’ve had control for far too long, but things are about to change. For the next two years, Republicans will control the presidency, the House, and the Senate. Democrats can kick and scream all they want, but Trump is going to make America great again.

Key Takeaways:

  • Senate Democrats try to push through Biden’s pick at the last minute.
  • Republicans stopped them in a 50-49 vote with the help of defectors Manchin and Sinema.
  • Democrats were desperate to keep control of the NLRB.
