For decades, Democrats have dreamed of flipping Texas. Every election cycle, they flood the Lone Star State with cash and consultants, promising that this time will be different. In 2026, with a white-knuckle Senate race on the line, they might actually be right. But what should concern every Texas conservative isn’t merely that Democrats are competitive – it’s the specific brand of Democrat they’ve put on the ballot.

Because the lesson the left drew from their recent defeats wasn’t to moderate. It wasn’t to pivot toward the center and speak the language of low taxes, limited government, and personal freedom. No, their grand inspiration came straight out of New York City – and every Texan with a stake in this state’s future ought to be paying very close attention.

From The Post Millennial:

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is looking to change Texas to more closely mirror the policies enacted under New York City socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Talarico has previously called Mamdani’s campaign a “template” for Democrats nationwide.

In an interview on the “Higher Learning” podcast in August 2025, shortly after Mamdani won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, Talarico said Democrats should “adopt” Mamdani’s talking points. Mamdani’s platform included a number of far-left proposals, including rent freezes, city-operated grocery stores, free public transportation, and higher taxes.

So a man running for the United States Senate in Texas – a state forged on independence, free enterprise, and a deep suspicion of government overreach – is taking his marching orders from a socialist mayor in Manhattan. Remarkable.

The socialist blueprint

Take a good look at what Talarico’s beloved “template” actually contains. Mamdani’s platform calls for government-imposed rent freezes that would gut property rights overnight. City-operated grocery stores – because apparently the government that can’t fill a pothole should be picking your produce. Free public transportation funded by, naturally, jacking up taxes on the people who actually earn a living.

Texas has no state income tax. Its pro-business climate has drawn families and companies fleeing blue-state decay for years. Talarico wants to reverse-engineer all of that and swap it out for the very model people have been escaping.

He’s not even coy about it. On NewsNation’s “The Hill,” when asked point-blank whether his coalition included Democratic socialists, Talarico said Democrats need a “giant tent” that was “going to include some Democratic Socialists.” On national television. With a straight face. As though inviting socialism into Texas politics were a feature, not a deal-breaker.

The radicalism runs deeper

If the economic agenda were the whole story, it would be alarming enough. But Talarico’s record reveals something more sweeping – a worldview that collides head-on with the values most Texans hold dear.

He has proclaimed that “radicalized white men are the greatest domestic terrorist threat in the country.” During the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, he went further, writing: “White skin gives me and every white American immunity from the virus. But we spread it wherever we go – through our words, our actions, and our systems.” Identity politics at its most divisive, delivered with missionary zeal.

And speaking of missionaries – Talarico is a Presbyterian seminarian who has managed to twist his own faith tradition into something unrecognizable. He has argued that transgenderism and abortion are acceptable under Christianity. He has claimed God is “non-binary.” He stated during a Texas legislative hearing that “modern science recognizes” more than two biological sexes. For millions of Texas churchgoers grounded in scripture and tradition, these aren’t mere policy disagreements. They’re provocations.

A race too close for comfort

Here’s why none of this is academic. A Fox News poll from late September found Talarico leading Republican nominee Ken Paxton 51 percent to 49 percent among likely Texas voters. That two-point gap falls within the margin of error.

This is real. A candidate who wants to import New York City socialism, who embraces the radical fringes of his party on race and religion, and who considers a socialist mayor his political lodestar is within a coin flip of representing 30 million Texans in the United States Senate.

Texas didn’t become the economic engine of America by following New York’s playbook. It got there by doing the precise opposite. Texans need to understand exactly who James Talarico is and what he intends to build – before he gets the chance to tear down everything that makes this state work.

Key Takeaways

  • Texas Senate candidate James Talarico openly models his campaign on a New York City socialist.
  • Mamdani’s “template” includes rent freezes, government-run grocery stores, and higher taxes.
  • Talarico’s radical views on race, gender, and faith place him far outside Texas mainstream values.
  • A Fox News poll shows Talarico within two points – this race is a genuine toss-up.
