Top Republican Leader Makes Announcement – The Nation Responds to Scalise’s Cancer Diagnosis

What’s Happening:

Steve Scalise is a long-serving Republican in the House of Representatives. He currently serves as the House Majority Leader. But you might remember how, in 2017, he was nearly killed by an assassin’s bullet. A gunman opened fire on a Republican baseball game practice. Scalise was left in critical condition but received a standing ovation from both parties when he returned to work months later.

That moment solidified his reputation as a stalwart congressman and ally to his party. But this week, the Republican took to social media to reveal startling news. According to his post, he was “not feeling” like himself for about a week. He went to the doctor for an examination and blood work. And this is what he discovered.

From Daily Wire:

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced on Tuesday that he is being treated for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer…

“I have now begun treatment, which will continue for the next several months. I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District,” the congressman added.

Rep. Scalise revealed that after numerous tests, he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. According to the Republicans, this is a very treatable blood cancer. It is unknown what caused the condition. But he will undergo several months of treatment.

The House Majority Leader vowed to continue his work, despite the treatment. He said he will continue serving the House and the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District. In the post, he also thanked his family, medical team, and God for the quick diagnosis, treatment, and support.

To date, the post has received 3.3 million views on X. Users commented on the post with well wishes, prayers, and support. It appears Scalise has faced at least his second life-threatening crisis while in office. But, as was the case in 2017, it does not appear that he is throwing in the towel.

In recent years, he’s continued to play in the Congressional Baseball Games. In fact, he’s helped Republicans win with impressive plays.

Key Takeaways:

  • House Majority Leader Steve Scalise announced he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
  • The Republican revealed the news on X, saying the disease is “very treatable.”
