Trump Hits Former Lawyer Cohen with Lawsuit – $500M Accusation Alleges Multiple Lies, Betrayal

Former President Donald Trump is embroiled in a legal battle in New York, where he recently pled not guilty to 34 felony counts. But that appears to only be the start of Trump’s court fights.

That particular fight is bound to drag on for many months but in the meantime, #45 is making some moves of his own.

Such as suing his former lawyer for $500 million.

Trump’s legal team filed the massive lawsuit on Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, and it slaps controversial attorney Michael Cohen with multiple accusations.

Cohen is one of many high-profile individuals who used to be a Trump ally, but has since made a name for himself by turning on the former POTUS.

This lawsuit is punishment for Cohen’s “lies” and “betrayal,” according to the filing. While it’s unlikely that Trump will be awarded the full amount of the suit, it remains a landmark case.

Via The Daily Wire:

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, accuses Cohen of betraying the attorney-client relationship, improper enrichment, and spreading falsehoods.

The suit cites Cohen’s public statements, including in books, and says Cohen ignored ‘cease and desist’ orders.

‘This is an action arising from [Cohen’s] multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, conversion and breaches of contract by virtue of [Cohen’s] past service as [Trump’s] employee and attorney,’ the lawsuit states.

Cohen’s lawyers were quick to fight back, however.

Lanny Davis is Cohen’s attorney, and he immediately released a public statement accusing Trump of “once again using and abusing the judicial system as a form of harassment and intimidation against Michael Cohen.”

Davis added that Trump is “terrified by his looming legal perils” and swears that the suit will fail “based on the facts and the law.”

Maybe it’s no coincidence that this $500M lawsuit drops shortly after Trump’s arrest, where he’ll have to fight back against 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Cohen actually testified to the grand jury regarding this case, though a Trump spokesperson told Fox News that the $500M suit isn’t retaliation for that. He said it has “nothing to do” with Bragg’s probe.

It’s also important to note Cohen’s past:

Back in 2018, he pleaded guilty to numerous crimes, which included lying to Congress. He claimed he facilitated payments to two women who threatened legal action against Trump, but that turned out to be untrue.

As a result, Cohen went to prison for 3 years; he only recently got out in 2021.

In the past few years, the disgraced lawyer has said he regrets his “blind loyalty” to Trump and wishes he hadn’t covered up his “dirty deeds.” On the flip side, Trump maintains that Cohen just keeps lying.

The former President was a prominent businessman for decades before entering the political sphere, so he’s used to being in court.

But this time, we’ll have to see if these numerous legal tussles have a negative impact on his 2024 campaign. So far, it only seems to have rejuvenated his significant support base.

Key Takeaways:

  • Former President Donald Trump is suing his former lawyer Michael Cohen for $500M.
  • The suit alleges lies and betrayal, as well as breach of contract.
  • Cohen’s attorney responded by saying Trump is just “terrified of his looming legal perils.”
