What’s Happening:
Last month, Donald Trump announced his 2024 bid for the White House. It was news long-awaited by his supporters. But the primaries are a long way from now, and potential Republican rivals haven’t even announced his plans.
Trump’s nomination isn’t a shoo-in this time around. And there could be many other candidates vying for a chance at the White House. One familiar name keeps popping up and there are signs he will make a big announcement, perhaps next year. Now, he has even more reason to jump into the ring, on news of this poll.
From Breitbart:
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) leads former President Donald Trump among Republicans by 23 points in a hypothetical GOP primary matchup, a Tuesday USA Today/Suffolk University poll revealed.
Fifty-six percent of Republicans and right-leaning voters supported DeSantis, while 33 percent backed Trump.
More than 60 percent of respondents indicated they would support a nominee who would advocate for Trump’s America First policies, such as border security and economic nationalism, but want a different person to be the standard-bearer.
This is a pretty fascinating poll. And it flies in the face of what the left has been claiming. The new poll reveals that a majority of Republican voters want Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to run for president, rather than Trump.
What’s interesting about the poll is that those asked still supported Trump’s America-First agenda. They just believe a new person should carry that movement into the White House. Which shows that voters haven’t sided with Biden’s socialist agenda one bit.
Perhaps voters think DeSantis can do a better job of working with both Republicans and Democrats? Or that Trump’s recent antics have hurt the party, especially given the 2022 midterm results.
We can’t be sure, but the shift in support is noticeable. In July, 60% of voters wanted Trump to run again. In October, that dropped to 56%. And now, after the midterms, only 31% of those polled want Trump to run again.
It seems sentiment is shifting away from Trump and toward DeSantis. But he has yet to announce a 2024 campaign. Could that be coming in the new year? We’ll have to wait and watch.
Key Takeaways:
- A new USA Today poll found that 56% of GOP voters want DeSantis to run. Thirty-three percent support Trump.
- This is a big shift from earlier in the year when 60% of those polled wanted Trump to run.
- Sentiment for Trump appears to have changed since the 2022 midterms.
