Trump/DeSantis Polling Just Took a Sharp Turn – Immediately After Trump Arrest Report Hits

When the news broke that former President Donald Trump might be arrested, the political world exploded with reactions and predictions.

Some said the indictment of Trump was another ploy to keep him out of the White house. Others claimed it would only serve to amp up Trump’s supporters, and give him an even bigger advantage.

Well, the latest polling is in — and it looks like we have the answer.

According to a new Morning Consult survey, Trump has indeed benefited from the surprise event. It isn’t a monumental change but as it happened in less than a week, it’s still significant.

As it turns out, Trump’s lead in the GOP has grown while his primary contender, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has faded a bit:

Trump’s support rose 2 percent, from 52 to 54%, while DeSantis dropped by the same amount (from 28 to 26%).

This translates to a 4-point gain for the former POTUS, who is facing the allegation that he paid $130,000 in hush money to former pornstar Stormy Daniels. Trump maintains his innocence on that charge.

As usual, it seems clear that it all comes down to Trump and DeSantis right now, though the latter leader hasn’t formally announced a 2024 run yet.

No other candidate is close; former Vice President Mike Pence is only able to garner 7 percent support right now, and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley comes in at about 4 percent.

It’s also clear that for most voters, Trump or DeSantis is invariably their second-choice candidate.

This survey was held between March 17 and March 19, and it’s important to remember that Trump revealed his impending arrest on March 18, so this poll happened in the midst of that bombshell.

2024 is still a ways away but the two primary opponents are obviously Trump and DeSantis right now. How they stack up against each other will likely continue to change over the course of the next year.

But this news should be a strong message to Democrats: continually attacking Trump only seems to invigorate his support base.

Key Takeaways:

  • A new survey shows that former President Donald Trump has gained more support from Republican voters.
  • After his arrest announcement, he picked up 2 percentage points, while FL Gov. Ron DeSantis lost 2 points.
  • This appears to confirm claims that going after Trump will increase his support.
