Former President Donald Trump has a Midas touch when it comes to selecting candidates he believes can make a difference in politics. His brand, in business and the political scene, carries a lot of weight when election day rolls around.
Trump often picks up on the character and influence of people in ways others might miss. He then makes a decision about that person and openly promotes those he sees with potential.
The Republican primary in North Carolina heated up this week after Trump endorsed his selection for governor of the state. Trump introduced his pick during a rally in Greensboro, N.C., in a way like no other.
From the Daily Caller:
Former President Donald Trump endorsed Republican North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson for governor of the state Saturday.“I heard him coming in on the plane. I was listening, and I said to the people on the plane, ‘Watch this. This is Martin Luther King on steroids,’” Trump told the audience.
“I think you’re better than Martin Luther King. I think you are Martin Luther King times two,” Trump told Robinson. “You should like it.”
Robinson was taken aback at the praise from Trump and “humbled” by the endorsement and comparison to the great civil rights leader. Robinson said he anticipates working with the GOP front-runner to “lead our United Republican ticket to victory in November, and get our state and country back on track.”
Trump praised Robinson as an “incredible gentleman” who is a “great, natural speaker.” Robinson was one of several North Carolina candidates who garnered Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” ahead of primary elections on Super Tuesday this week.
Listen to an excerpt of his powerful speech here:
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson rallies the crowd to support Donald Trump for president:
“We are in a dangerous situation. Never before has America been in peril like she is right now. But never before has America had an answer like we have right now in Donald J. Trump.” pic.twitter.com/ayBrdcgEZO— 🌹🦋🇺🇸Michele🇺🇸🦋🌹 (@MAJMO50) March 2, 2024
Robinson isn’t a shoe-in on the primary ballot. He faces North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell and trial attorney Bill Graham. Both have tried to cast doubt on the lieutenant governor’s chances of winning in the general election this November.
Democrats also head to the polls on Tuesday to choose a gubernatorial nominee. Their choices are between North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, who was endorsed by Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and former state Supreme Court Associate Justice Mike Morgan.
Trump’s endorsement of Robinson may be golden considering Trump won North Carolina during the presidential elections in 2016 and 2020. The state is a key battleground target for Republicans and Democrats again this year.
Key Takeaways:
- Trump endorsed GOP gubernatorial candidate as “MLK on steroids.”
- North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson was humbled by the praise.
- Trump called Robinson a “gentleman” and a “great, natural speaker.”
