Never fear, Biden’s team is here, and they are telling everyone how wonderful it is that prices for Thanksgiving staples have fallen since last year. And they are correct, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. Average costs for a turkey, typical side dishes, and desserts have dipped slightly from record highs in 2022.
But the prosperity claim is tempered when current prices are compared to before Biden took office. Prices are still higher than they were in previous years, particularly before the pandemic, according to The Daily Wire. Joe and company are taking credit when the reality is people are still hurting under his administration.
According to a report published by the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost for a Thanksgiving meal for ten people in 2023 is $61.17. That is a drop of 4.5% from the 2022 average cost of $64.05, but it’s still up 14.7% from 2021 ($53.31) and up 25% from 2019 ($48.91).
“According to AFBF’s national Thanksgiving survey, 2023 will have the second most expensive Thanksgiving meal in the survey’s 38-year history,” the AFBF wrote in the final report. “Although survey prices have begun to come down, food price inflation remains a real issue and serves as a constraint on the budget of all U.S. consumers.”
AFBF credited the drop in turkey prices as the main driver of the lower meal cost average, along with reductions in seven of the 11 dinner items in the survey. Depending on where you live, the costs may not be the same as the average.
Prices varied across the United States, according to The Daily Wire, with the average cost higher on the West Coast ($63.89) and the Northeast ($64.38) than it is in the South ($59.10) and the Midwest ($58.66).
